Group Outline as written by Neron Kesar
Seattle Six is the unofficial public group for accessing the staff of Newsvine. The name derives from the facts that Newsvine is based in Seattle and staffed by a total of six people, including Mike Davidson and Calvin Tang.
Seattle Six is the place to air issues relative to Newsvine that would ordinarily be communicated directly to staff via emails of phone calls. Whereas staff are still available through emails and phone, posting to this site is the preferred avenue when the issues would benefit from public input. Recent growth of the Newsvine Community associated with the acquisition of Newsvine by MSNBC.com necessitates that staff curtail the time and energy they used to devote to individual inquiries. In the spirit of responsive candor and availability to the community at large, staff plan to glean the relevant issues from these postings and prepare a periodic update readily accessible to all.
What issues are suitable and what issues are not suitable for posting here?
Suitable issues would include complaints and grievances regarding Newsvine site functionality; communication failures such as timeliness, failure to respond, failure to address; clarification of goals and objectives; dissatisfaction with features; etc. Unfortunately, the emphasis is on the negative side of day-to-day operations, but the upside is that the end goal of the Seattle Six site is SOLVING PROBLEMS.
Suitable issues would NOT include personal matters that would not ordinarily be aired in public, or mediation of inter-member disputes. Also, the Seattle Six site is not a replacement for the MetaVine and Community groups, older sites where members ordinarily share ideas about a variety of innovations. Refer directly to those sites for a clarification of their goals and objectives.
Because staff do not have the luxury to read every article, let alone every comment, posted on Newsvine, the goal of this group is to assist them in streamlining their time while also preserving the free flow of communication between the community base and staff. The Newsvine Community is largely driven by trust and is self-regulated. Given these realities, it makes sense to have a single place for staff to gauge the health of the community as reflected in the comments, complaints, and suggestions posted. It makes equal sense for the community to expect regular, comprehensive updates addressing their collective concerns.
I am posting this article to announce the group, and to give all newsvine users an opportunity to further discuss the outline, goals, and nuts 'n bolts of how the group will organize and function.
