Being a newsvine newbie I must say my first week's experience has been quite interesting. I have read quite a few interesting articles, met a number of nice folks, been engaged in some thoughtful discussions, and been able to laugh-it-up with some of the jokesters.
So someone might ask - Isn't this enough? What more could you want? What more could there be?
My simple reply is - I want it all.
I say this because I have found the "online help" rather sketchy and have received most of my vine savvy from the many viners who explained some of the ins and outs of this site to me. To these people who have helped, I say thank-you for being so free with your time and knowledge.
So without further babble here is my newsvine Christmas wish list.
A wysiwyg editor for writing/editing articles. There is a sparse wysiwyg editor in the "add a comment" why not in the editor. Some folks have tried to help by referencing older stories but these turned out to be "greek to me" and I was unsuccessful in making these how-to's work. Some might say I'm being lazy and should just learn xhtml, but in this techno age why should I? I have already invested much time learning Cobal, Basic, and Pascal none of which are useful anymore. I just want to be able to "point, drag, and click" to enrich my articles (and not see the code).
A way to look-up who's watching me. I know how to add an author to my watch list, but being curious I'd like to see who's watching me. It's probably an ego thing. Or I'm being narcissistic. Maybe we can't because it's some kind of stalker issue. My inquiring mind would like to know.
A way to remove groups from my watchlist. Ok, I am probably the only one to screw-up my watch list by adding groups to it, but now that I have, I would like to be able to remove them.
A way to find "original" work. I enjoy reading the work of others. I think it would be useful to be able to go to an author's column and sort their postings by original, clipped, and seeded. Depending on my mood, state of mind, and time available at different times I am looking for different things to read.
A way to move "The Top Story" from the center of my page. Maybe this is a marketing agreement or maybe it's as simple as "if it isn't at the top, then it's not a top story." I don't mind having to keep it on my top news page, I would just like to be able to move it somewhere else. (I won't ask about the ad on the right side of the column, that I understand $$ )
A request to fellow viners - If a comment you reference is more than a few comments earlier (I don't know maybe 5, 8, 10?), please reference either the posters name, the post#, or both. It can be difficult to "go up the page" to find the quote "I think idiots are crazy" embedded in a long comment 15 posts earlier. You have caught my interest and I want to follow the thread line, so a little help would be appreciated. (Thanks in advance)
Show how many people are logged-in. Sometimes a post receives a flurry of activity. In fact the article acts almost like an on-line chat room. I could better judge reaction to my comments if I knew how many folks were on-line. Also some articles are more of a discussion type than static. I might select a different time to post a story depending on the current activity.
A top flight spell checker. This is not for me but my friend oldfogey. As I commented in a different thread: "Geeze......I don't know what all the commotion about the spell checker is about. The owner/operator of my computer spells so bad there hasn't been spell checker invented that can figure out a word/spelling to suggest. Basically I get: I checked your document, this word is wrong, I haven't a clue what word you want, good luck, and your on your own."
So Calvin if your listening, oldfogey hasn't forgot about the spell checker.
Well that's my list for now. Please keep in mind it's 4 days 'till Christmas, and being the needy want-it-all kinda guy I am, I reserve the write (hehe) to add more things to my list. If others would like to add something from their newsvine Christmas list......feel free to do so.
I just hope we don't get a bag of coal.
